Abstract
Established by the United States Constitution’s Article III in 1789, the Supreme Court of the United States has held numerous significant decisions. Some of these decisions have had a major impact on shaping the current US judicial, political, and social system.
Some of the rulings the Supreme Court has made improved liberties, while others have barred people from obtaining basic human rights for decades.
Criticism of the Supreme Court has never ended since its establishment. On one hand, it has been criticized for engaging in judicial activism, interfering in purely political matters, and having excessive power. On the other hand, it has been criticized for not protecting civil liberties, refraining from reviewing socially debated problems, and rendering opinions that reflect the justices’ political standpoints. Sometimes the tension due to the Supreme Court decisions elevated beyond control, which caused a war that took lives of million Americans. Sometimes the state governors did not want to comply with the decision, resulting the President of the US to send the US Army to take control of the state from the governor.
Focus of the cases that will be reviewed will be race, governmental power, due process and civil liberties.
During the conference, monumental Supreme Court decisions will be reviewed to examine their impact at the time they were ruled, and their reflection throughout US history.
