Dean's Message

Law, being one of the oldest scientific disciplines in the world, has evolved in different ways in each society however economic, political and cultural interactions have increased the common grounds among societies and decreased their differences by time. Development rate of modern societies bring along a constant transformation for all countries’ legal orders and obligate improvement of capacity to find new solutions to new problems. While establishment of an international organization like the United Nations has been a big reform in the first half of the 20th century, the European Union as a supra-national structure was a new answer to new problems.
Law Faculty which was established in the academic year 2002-2003 within Bilkent University, the first and still the biggest foundation university of Turkey, raises students with a syllabus that combines the historical and modern dimensions of law and that was developed with a dynamic understanding. Legal education, far beyond transfer of legislation knowledge at a given time, aims at understanding the law within its logical context and to grasping developments quickly to address them. Bilkent University which has the largest library among foundation universities, encourages its students to conduct scientific research during their education and to improve their critical thinking abilities.
Our faculty follows a multi-dimensional teaching plan in order to raise its students with capacity to succeed both within national and international community. In addition to national legislation, some of the courses with an international dimension are taught by experienced foreign faculty members who are in a leading position in their fields. This way, it is ensured that European and Anglo-American legal education methods are implemented and that English language skills are acquired as early as bachelor years. Additionally, the students obtain the possibility to learn other foreign languages at advanced level thanks to academic German courses and other foreign language courses provided by Foreign Languages Unit at the university.
As a result of Erasmus agreements executed with established universities in Europe, our students find the opportunity to get to know the cultures of other universities and expand their academic horizons during their undergraduate and graduate trainings. This is evidenced with, among other things, the outstanding success of our students continuing their academic careers in distinguished universities abroad for their graduate and doctoral studies or working in international organizations and companies.
Bilkent University Faculty of Law also contributes to academic studies in the field of law with its Economic Law Master Program, Private Law and Public Law master and doctorate programs carried out within Graduate School of Economics and Social Sciences.
